Core Grammar Principles

Understanding sentence structure is key to passing the EPS-TOPIK reading section. Study these 4 major concepts:

1. Sentence Structure (SOV)

English sentences follow Subject-Verb-Object (SVO). Korean sentences always place the **Verb at the very end** (Subject-Object-Verb / SOV).

Subject + Object + Verb
저 (I) + 사과 (Apple) + 먹습니다 (Eat)
→ I eat an apple.

2. Topic/Subject Particles

Particles are attached to the end of nouns to clarify their role in the sentence.

은/는 (eun/neun): Attaches to the Topic of the sentence.
(은 after consonant, 는 after vowel. e.g., 저는, 사람은).
이/가 (i/ga): Attaches to the Subject of the sentence.
(이 after consonant, 가 after vowel. e.g., 날씨가, 책이).

3. Object Particles (을/를)

The object particle identifies the noun receiving the verb's action.

을 (eul): After consonant (e.g. 밥을 - rice, 책을 - book).
를 (reul): After vowel (e.g. 사과를 - apple, 차를 - tea).

4. Politeness Levels

Verb endings change to show respect to the listener.

Formal Polite (-습니다 / -ㅂ니다): Used in exams, business, and military context.
(e.g., 먹습니다 - eats, 갑니다 - goes).
Informal Polite (-아요 / -어요): Used in daily conversations.
(e.g., 먹어요 - eats, 가요 - goes).
